Brief: User friendly CMS, bespoke website build with an engaging user experience to compliment the photographic content. Book design and layout by blok design
Challenge
To create an online version of the book which retained the evocative and tactile elements of the print product whilst building a flexible CMS to enable the client to add to the galleries and expand the project in a fully complimentary, visually creative style – without being editorially over complicated.
A custom WordPress theme was built to achieve this on the front-end, whilst a bespoke gallery plugin and the careful inclusion of Advanced Custom Fields gave the client all the necessary options for page layouts and category allocation.
Fully responsive with a strong focus on tablet functionality and a rich UX.
Methods
With the “creative” in this project already in place via the book design, the next step was to work with the client to see which particular characteristics could be transferred to the online version.
Those key elements included the richness of the photography with a warm sense of nostalgia and history. This bespoke theme was created with the ‘underscores’ framework, containing handwritten CSS, HTML, PHP and uses custom fields to provide the 3 optional page layout styles. The use of a soft, evocative colour palette and the gentle touch screen action of the galleries complete the UI.
